Chicago Auto Accident Attorneys
Representing Victims of Cell Phone Auto Accidents throughout Illinois
Cell phone use while driving is an incredibly dangerous activity that can lead to serious auto accidents. In fact, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for a nationwide ban on texting and making phone calls while driving because they are responsible for so many accidents. In 2009 alone, nearly 5,500 fatalities and 500,000 injuries resulted from crashes involving a distracted driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Even when drivers use a hands-free cell phone while driving and both hands are on the wheel, talking on a cell phone distracts a driver and can lead to accidents caused by inattentive driving. According to the National Highway and Transportation Safety Association, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers that use cell phones are four times more likely to get into auto accidents that result in injuries.
Despite all of the warnings and laws prohibiting cell phone use, drivers continue to use cell phones when behind the well and accidents continue to happen as a result. The Illinois cell phone accident attorneys at Ankin Law have significant experience representing victims of motor vehicle accidents, including those caused by cell phone use and inattentive driving, as well as alcohol-related accidents, head-on collisions, and rear-end accidents.
Illinois Laws Prohibiting Cell Phone Use
Illinois prohibits the use of hand-held cell phones while driving in a school zone or highway construction zone. Illinois law also prohibits sending or reading text messages and emails while driving anywhere within the state. Drivers under the age of 19 are prohibited from using cell phones with or without hands-free devices while driving. The Illinois legislature is also considering a statewide ban on all cell phone use unless the driver is using a hands-free device.
Several other cities, including Chicago, Evanston and Winnetka, prohibit the use of hand-held cell phones while driving all together.
